What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Morocco

Two women pose together at a scenic viewpoint overlooking a sprawling city and hills, enjoying a sunny day.

Morocco was unforgettable, but there were definitely things I wish I had known ahead of time. This isn’t to scare anyone — it’s to help you go in prepared and enjoy it for what it is.

🚽 Bathrooms Are… An Experience

Public bathrooms often don’t have toilet paper, soap, or paper towels. Even in restaurants. Carry tissues, hand sanitizer, and be prepared for very basic facilities. This was one of the biggest day-to-day adjustments.

🚿 “Luxury” Doesn’t Always Mean What You Think

Even in a five-star hotel, we experienced inconsistent hot water and other small comfort issues. Beautiful design does not always equal Western-style convenience. If you’re a very comfort-driven traveler, this might be frustrating.

🧭 Tours Can Be Misleading

Not all tours are created equal. Our Atlas Mountains tour didn’t mention we’d be doing strenuous uphill hiking, and the guide offered very little explanation along the way.

Ask specific questions before booking:

  • How difficult is the walking/hiking?
  • How much time is spent at shops?
  • Is the guide licensed and focused on cultural information?

A good guide can make a huge difference. A bad one can make a day feel long.

🛍 The Medina Is Overwhelming Without a Guide

The souks are fascinating but intense — narrow alleys, constant directions from strangers, and aggressive selling. Booking a private guide made this experience educational and fun instead of stressful.

This was one of the best decisions we made.

⏰ Lines Don’t Always Look Like Lines

At places like the Saadian Tombs, you may walk right in and think you got lucky — only to find the real wait is inside. Go early, lower expectations, and prioritize sites that truly interest you.

🧣 Modest Clothing Makes Everything Easier

You don’t need to cover your hair, but having:

  • Shoulders covered
  • Knees covered
  • A scarf or shawl handy

…helps you feel more comfortable and draws less attention.

💧 Your Stomach Might Struggle

Different water, different bacteria, rich food — it happens. Bring stomach meds just in case and stick to bottled water.

🌍 It’s Not an “Easy” Destination — And That’s the Point

Morocco is not polished, predictable, or catered to tourists in the way many European destinations are. It can be chaotic, uncomfortable, and overwhelming.

But it’s also:

  • Visually stunning
  • Deeply cultural
  • Completely different from everyday life back home

It pushes you out of your comfort zone — and sometimes that’s where the most meaningful travel experiences happen.

Bottom line: Go to Morocco for the culture, history, and perspective — not for luxury or relaxation. If you adjust your expectations, you’ll come home with incredible stories (and a new appreciation for hot showers and stocked bathrooms).

If you’re like me, you follow travel influencers on social media and trust they know what they’re talking about. Well, I wish someone had been more honest about how things really are in Morocco

It was a great, hilariously different experience — but some preparation would have made it even better. Morocco is unforgettable, but there are definitely things I wish I had known ahead of time. This isn’t to scare anyone — it’s to help you go in prepared and enjoy it for what it is.

Morocco: What I Wish I Knew

🚽 Bathrooms are basic – often no toilet paper, soap, or towels. Carry tissues & sanitizer.

🚿 Luxury ≠ comfort – even “5-star” hotels can have no hot water & hard beds.

🧭 Tours vary – ask about walking difficulty, shop stops, and guide experience.

🛍 Medina = chaos – private guides make it fun, not stressful.

⏰ Lines can trick you – Saadian Tombs looks quick, but the real wait is inside.

🧣 Dress modestly – shoulders & knees covered, scarf handy.

💧 Stomach prep – stick to bottled water & bring meds.

🌍 It’s not “easy” – Morocco is chaotic, intense, and overwhelming… but breathtaking, cultural, and unforgettable.

Bottom line: Go for culture & perspective, not luxury. Embrace the chaos — it’s part of the adventure!
